Hashes

How to Use

Enter any string, secret, or payload into the input box. The tool automatically computes cryptographic hashes in real-time using MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 algorithms. Click the copy icon next to any generated hash to copy it to your clipboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cryptographic hash function?

A cryptographic hash function is a deterministic mathematical algorithm that maps arbitrary-length input data into a fixed-length string of bytes (digest). It is computationally infeasible to invert or deduce the original input from the output.

What is the difference between MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512?

They differ in output digest length (128, 160, 256, and 512 bits) and cryptographic security. MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically broken due to practical collision vulnerabilities; SHA-256 and SHA-512 remain modern, secure industry standards.

What is a hash collision?

A hash collision occurs when two distinct input messages produce the exact same output hash digest. Cryptographically secure hash algorithms are specifically designed to have strong collision resistance.

Why should fast hashes not be used directly for password storage?

Algorithms like MD5 and SHA-256 are engineered for speed, allowing attackers using modern GPUs to compute billions of guesses per second. Passwords require slow, key-stretched algorithms like Bcrypt, Argon2, or PBKDF2.

What is the avalanche effect in hashing?

The avalanche effect is a critical cryptographic property where a minor modification in the input (even flipping a single bit) causes the output digest to change drastically and appear completely uncorrelated.

How are hashes used to verify file integrity?

Distributors publish cryptographic checksums (typically SHA-256) alongside downloadable files. Users compute the hash of the downloaded file locally; if the checksums match exactly, the file has not been corrupted or tampered with.

Can a cryptographic hash be decrypted?

No. Hashes are strictly one-way mathematical functions, not encryption algorithms. There is no secret key to decrypt a hash; original plaintext can only be identified by guessing or testing precomputed lookup tables.

What is a rainbow table attack and how is it prevented?

A rainbow table is a precomputed database of plaintext words and their corresponding hash values. Adding a cryptographically random, unique salt to each input before hashing completely defeats rainbow table attacks.

How are SHA-256 hashes used in Git and blockchains?

Git uses cryptographic hashes to address commits, trees, and blobs by content; Bitcoin and blockchains use SHA-256 for Proof-of-Work mining puzzles and Merkle tree transaction verification.

Is your input text sent to an external server when generating hashes?

No. All hash calculations are performed strictly client-side within your browser using the native Web Cryptography API and CryptoJS, ensuring complete privacy.
