Ready to connect. Select Live WebSocket or Local Echo Simulation and click Connect.

How to Use

Enter a WebSocket URL (wss:// or ws://) or enable Local Echo Simulation Mode to test offline. Click Connect, type a text or JSON payload, and click Send Message to inspect real-time incoming and outgoing frames with timestamps, byte sizes, and round-trip latency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ws:// and wss://?

ws:// is an unencrypted WebSocket connection (similar to HTTP), whereas wss:// is a WebSocket Secure connection encrypted over TLS/SSL (similar to HTTPS). When accessing a web app over HTTPS, browsers require wss:// for remote servers due to Mixed Content security rules.

How does the Local Echo Simulation mode work?

Local Echo Simulation emulates a compliant WebSocket echo server directly inside your browser without requiring internet access. Every text, JSON, or ping frame you send is echoed back with realistic metadata, byte counts, and round-trip latency measurements.

What is a WebSocket subprotocol?

A subprotocol (passed via the Sec-WebSocket-Protocol header during the HTTP Upgrade handshake) lets the client and server agree on an application-level messaging format such as graphql-ws, mqtt, wamp, or json.

Why did my live WebSocket connection fail immediately?

Immediate connection closures (Close Code 1006) typically happen when the target server is offline, blocks cross-origin connections via Origin header checks, requires an authentication token in the query string, or uses ws:// from an HTTPS page.

Do WebSockets follow browser CORS headers?

WebSockets do not use standard Access-Control-Allow-Origin preflight headers. Instead, the browser sends an Origin header during the initial HTTP 101 Switching Protocols handshake, and the WebSocket server decides whether to accept or reject that Origin.

How is round-trip latency (RTT) measured in this tool?

The tool records a high-resolution performance.now() timestamp when an outgoing message or ping is dispatched and calculates the elapsed milliseconds as soon as the next incoming response frame arrives from the server.

Can I test GraphQL subscriptions over WebSockets?

Yes. Set the subprotocol to graphql-transport-ws or graphql-ws, connect to your GraphQL endpoint, and use the GraphQL-WS Init template to send a connection_init payload followed by your subscription query.

What do WebSocket close codes like 1000 and 1006 mean?

Code 1000 indicates a normal, clean closure by either peer. Code 1001 means the endpoint is going away, while Code 1006 is an abnormal closure indicating the TCP connection dropped or the handshake failed without a close frame.

Why should I use Auto-Ping on long-lived WebSocket connections?

Reverse proxies, load balancers (such as Nginx or AWS ALB), and NAT firewalls often terminate idle TCP connections after 60 seconds. Periodic application-level ping messages keep the connection active and detect silent disconnects early.

Are my WebSocket messages logged on any external server?

No. Connections are opened directly from your browser's native WebSocket API to the URL you specify, or processed entirely in memory when using Local Echo Simulation mode.
